With Christmas nearing we can look back at a highly successful year of JCI Expat Budapest. Thanks to the tireless efforts of Maryna Yaroshchuk and her fellow board members our ranks have grown to 35 members from all corners of the globe. In her final message as president of JCI Expat Budapest in 2011, Maryna has highlighted the great events and accomplishments of this year, please read on until the end of the letter.

As a member of the board in 2011, I believe that the great achievements of this year, even more so than before, were due to initiatives from within the organisation. Many of the members have actively contributed to the success of the last 12 months. Not only by participating and being great friends but also by stepping up and helping the board organise great events. I believe we can all bear the fruits of these combined efforts in the form of a healthy chapter, both from a membership as well as a financial point of view. For this I would like to express my sincere thanks.

For the coming year the board will start with the professionalization of our organisation, while keeping the friendship and fun that have been the trademark of JCI Expat Budapest in the past years. For our members this will mean even higher quality trainings and events. The year will kick-off with high ranking visitors, such as the World President of JCI, fellow Dutchman Bertolt Daems, who will visit us in February. In addition we have good contacts with the Dreher Beer brewery and Siemens factory for some exiting company visits in the coming months! In the first weeks of January the Board will inform all of you about the plans in 2012, but you can also propose your ideas to us anytime!

If you cannot wait till next year, or you simply want to give yourself or your partner a super special Christmas present you can already sign up to join us next year. The JCI Expat Budapest membership fee will be 22.000 HUF from February onwards. To acknowledge your involvement and dedication, we offer 20,000 HUF fee per year, if you continue your membership and pay until January 31:

- As an individual or as a company (VAT invoices available upon request)

Final Message from President 2011, Maryna Yaroshchuk:

Our journey in 2011 started with a holiday greetings video on scooters, then we took our skies for a perfect teambuilding, followed by skating with the old and new members of our extended JCI Expat Budapest family. This year we also learned how to climb, tell Abarica from Robusta, good CSR from evil greenwashing,  realists from impressionists, as well as witnessed a fascinating entrepreneurial testimony from Gabor Bojar of Graphisoft  and raised funds for homeless children. Whichever event or challenge we undertook, we succeeded in enjoying it, even if there was no wind or too much wind for sailing. As Buddha said, it is better to travel well than to arrive.

During this year we have doubled our membership, increased the number of events twice, organized the largest Balaton Weekend up-to-date, and professionalized our communication outreach in Budapest. On international level, JCI Expat was represented at the European Conference in Tarragona, as well as found a new Twinning Partner in JCI Amsterdam Int’l. This is all thanks to the supportive board, immediate past presidents and our caring members.

In 2012 the future path of our organization will be paved by Guido and his team. I trust that together with your help and leadership of this enthusiastic new crew, JCI Expat Budapest will become the leading expat organization for young people who want to create positive change, in whichever way you interpret it. I invite you to speak up and get more involved in shaping the course of events, because this is the best way to leave a mark, rather than taking the existing road.

At the close of this successful year, I gratefully pause to wish you a warm and pleasant Christmas and a peaceful and prosperous New Year!

Every Christmas we help less fortunate members of our society and this year we are supporting children at the homeless shelter at Menedékház. We have teamed up with Serve the City organization, which has initiated the Christmas Shoe Box collection of gifts. You can make an in-kind gift or a donation of 3,000 HUF per shoe box, and Serve the City volunteers will deliver them directly to the homeless shelter on December 20. At the potluck party, Adrienn Pasics, JCI FVE and volunteer at STC, will tell you more about the organization and how they are helping the needy in Budapest.

Where does Brad Pitt store his machine guns? Is Angelina Jolie really that pretty up close? Come and find out at the JCI Expat Budapest tour of the Korda Filmstudio’s in Etyek!

The Korda Studios project was announced in 2004, with the dream of designing and building a brand-new film studio complex able to meet the complex needs of modern international film production. Named after Sir Alexander Korda, the studio aims to create an international center of excellence for the film making community. The studio opened for business in the Spring of 2007, and while its development continues, it has already hosted some of the most prestigious local and international films and commercials ever filmed in Hungary.

So come and join us to visit the sets of 1980′s New York or present day Italy during a 1,5 hour tour of the studio’s. After the tour there will be some snacks and a presentation about the three aspects of film making by the staff of the Korda studio’s.

Car:

Total driving time: 30-45 minutes. So leave at 15:15 latest!

• Leave Budapest from the Buda side following signs towards WIEN (Vienna) and BALATON. Exit Budapest via the M1-M7 highway.
• When the highways split keep right onto M1 towards direction WIEN (Vienna).
• Exit at BIATORBÁGY. After the exit take a left at the roundabout, and follow signs towards Biatorbágy. Enter Biatorbágy and follow the road to the center of the town.
• Take a left at the roundabout in the center of town towards SÓSKÚT – ETYEK.
• Head straight and then turn off right towards ETYEK before leaving Biatorbágy.
• Continue to the town of Etyek and pass through the town continuing straight along the road. Korda Studios will be to your left at the top of the hill after leaving the town.

As usual we will make a carpool of the people going there.

Other means of transportation are not recommended as the site is not located close to any major bus or train routes.

11 nationalities, 3 trainers, 3 JCI Hungary senators, 2 trainings, bogracs goulash dinner, one legendary party and lots of positive emotions = this is in a nutshell a summary of the 3rd JCI Expat Budapest Sailing&Training Weekend at Balatonfured. The key to success is a wonderful group of 28 positive and fun people who made the weekend unforgettable!

For the first time we invited members from a Twinning Partner organization JCI Amsterdam International. The three brave dutchmen, Merijn, Marcus and Bram, escaped rainy Amsterdam on Thursday and were happy to explore Budapest in tropical heat. Now we are thinking of a joint skiing weekend and looking forward to winter adventures in Austria!

The wise trainers  generously shared their knowledge and skills with us: Zsolt Feher, Endre Szontagh and Julia Szucs. Thanks to them we learned how to deal with people from different cultures, how to negotiate with them and keep an organization happy. As for me, I have confirmed that to be happy to is to make others so

After a tasty bogracs goulash dinner the restaurant of our venue transformed into the uninhabited island, where two ships crashed: one of sailors and another of pirates. Both sides competed for the main prize by demonstrating their creativity and outfits. The winner was decided unanimously: Admiral of the North Sea, Marcus Breet! Well done and egészségedre!

The Sailors & Pirates party lasted until dawn thanks to Disco Dave. We have also discovered dancing queens and kings in our chapter. No wonder that the whole JCI movement started from a dance club

On Sunday the crew visited picturesque and peaceful Tihany and chilled at the beach of Balatonfured. The sporty members and those who felt like burning off calories after eating langos and drinking beer played beachball. We signed the ball with our names and decided that the captain/president keeps it for the next team to play.

Thanks to our new member, Eelke Mourik, we have a unique chance for a behind-the-scenes visit to Sara Lee coffee factory in Budapest to discover more about the drink that gives you energy!

…Sara Lee is well known for, amongst others, Pickwick, Piazza D’Oro and DouweEgberts coffee and tea brands. Freshly prepared in their Budapest factory, we will get a chance to see and taste these high-quality drinks for ourselves! You will be given an insight in the coffee and tea production process from coffee bean to the finished product after which we will have a revitalising coffee tasting. The evening will conclude with a short company presentation highlighting how a factory of this size is run from a financial point of view.

How to get there:

Car:
From the city centre, follow the Váci út until just after the rail bridge, then turn right onto the Árpád út. Just before the St István Király Plébania leave the main road onto the Kiss János utca. Drive this road parallel to the main road until it goes underneath. On the other side go straight unto the Szilágyi utca. After about 1.5 km turn right onto the Töltés utca. Cross the railroad track and turn left unto the Harsány Kálmán út. Follow this for another 1.2 km until you arrive at the factory. Total time for your commute is 30 minutes (not including traffic jams).

Public Transport:
Take the M3 metro to Újpest, transfer to the 204 bus towards Rákospalota, direction Kossuth utca. Get of at the Széchenyi tér. Transfer to the 125 bus towards MEDIMPEX get of at the 5th stop Székely Elek út. Walk into the Székely Elek út (side of the factories) and follow the street until you get to the Harsány Kálmán út. Then turn right and walk to the factory (15 minute walk).
